Historical AccuracyA movie about alchemy and parallel worlds seems an unlikely candidate for an accurate depiction of historical events. Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, the culmination of a lauded 51-episode anime series, concludes the story of the Elric brothers against the backdrop of 1923 Germany and the rise of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. Its curious mix of history and story creates an interesting if occasionally clumsy blend of the series’ deeper themes and real-life events. The Culture GhettoI went to see Watchmen the first Saturday it was out, and was amazed at two things in particular: #1) Zack Snyder's almost absurd faithfulness to the original story (and how glorious certain parts of the movie were) and #2) that there were kids in the theater. The youngest there was about eight years old. Watchmen is rated R. It features incredibly graphic violence (including attempted rape, people exploding from the inside out, and a man getting his arms sawed off), an intricate storyline that revolves around Cold War nuclear tensions, and characters so morally ambiguous they make Hamlet look simple.
